Movies have been a major aspect of the entertainment industry for decades. For years, directors have developed, recorded, and produced many films of several genres. Although at times the outcome of the movie may not meet one’s expectations, individuals continue to view new films. In these past few months, the box-offices have released many major hits, and of the several movies, these three are ones you definitely have to watch.
Of the three movies, the one with the most success in the box office was Stephen King’s It. The movie, released in early September, earned a worldwide income of about $327 million. It takes place in the small, quaint town of Derry, Maine and revolves around a small group of kids who refer to themselves as the Loser’s Club. Though the town is quiet, odd occurrences have been taking place for years and everyone seems to ignore it. But when one of the “losers,” Billy, loses his brother spontaneously, these few kids start to notice that something is wrong. After exploring, they find out that their town is being tormented by a demon, who takes the form of a terrifying clown and refers to himself as Pennywise. Pennywise uses the fear of the kids in Derry, to lure them and keep them in his “lair”. As the movie progresses, the characters develop into brave kids who save all the missing kids and defeat Pennywise, or so they thought. This thriller-horror movie will be sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, making you laugh, cry, scream, and just about everything in between.
The most recent of the three, Murder on the Orient Express, is a film adaptation of the classic Agatha Christie novel of the same name. The film is still in theatres and so far, it has earned $61 million, almost three times the original 1974 feature. The film takes place in the early 1930s on a train, the Orient Express, traveling from Istanbul to London. On the train, is a renowned detective, Hercule Poirot, who is traveling to London for a case. On the second night, the train was suddenly stopped by an avalanche and when everyone woke up the next morning they found one of the passenger’s dead. Luckily Poirot was on board and ready to solve the case. With his skills and attentiveness, Poirot was able to find little clues that pointed him to the murderer, or murderers in this case. This film is full of mystery and will keep you wanting more. And the end results will leave you with your jaw down to the floor. This movie is a must see if you are a mystery enthusiast.
However, the movie that grabbed my attention was indie film, Loving Vincent. The movie centered on the life of Vincent van Gogh, especially after his death. The story is told in the perspective of a postman’s son, Armand, who was not very fond of Vincent. He goes around figuring out the death of van Gogh and why it happened, all while flashing back and forth to Vincent’s life and Armand’s perspective. But it is not the story that drew me to the movie, but the way it was created. This indie film is like no other, in the sense that it was completely hand painted. Each frame was painted by over 100 artists in the style of van Gogh, making it one beautifully made production. The movie responded very well with the public because this is one of those movies that can relate to everyone. It is important to watch and be educated on these artists, because modern art would not be the same without many of our past artists, including van Gogh himself.
The movie industry plays a huge role in our everyday life, without it some of us would be hopeless. Each movie is unique and each one of us relates to one movie or the other. These movies can either be extremely successful or so bad that it is good, but no matter what we still watch. So the next time you go to the movie theatres keep these three movies in mind.

Winter Formal

At 12:15 on Friday, January 19, students rushed out of the Abcarian building halls, hoping they would have enough time to get ready for the long awaited, formal. Guys put on their best suits and the girls slipped into their best dresses, anxiously waiting to see what their friends are going to wear. Members of specific grade levels gathered earlier together to start the celebration and take lots of pictures. Soon students started rolling into the beautifully decorated hall in Metropol. The night started off with dining, along with the occasional dancing to the Armenian music being played. However, as the music got more intense, students could not get off the dance floor. The rhythmic beats of Armenian, Arabic, Spanish, and English music filled the hall and the bodies of the students. They took a quick break for some water and kebab, but quickly stood back up to continue dancing. Towards the end of the night, we celebrated Mr. McCrory’s and junior Veronica Mkhsi-Gevokian’s birthdays ...

Anna Turcotte Visits Pilibos

We are Armenian scholars in an Armenian school; because of this, we are often exposed to our country’s good and bad, the highs and lows. We often hear about the Armenian Genocide and the Artsakh conflicts, but we are not always reminded of the conflicts our people face outside of the homeland. We have seen Genocide survivors and young Artsakh soldiers whose stories we have heard and are a little familiar to us. However we rarely hear from a survivor of mass discrimination and violence, who stood up with Armenians the way other survivors did- just outside the homeland. Pilibos freshmen, sophomores and juniors met one such survivor in an assembly on Tuesday February 27 when Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte came to Pilibos to share her story and experiences. Anna Turcotte was a ten year old girl living in Azerbaijan when her mother told her she could no longer go to volleyball practice. She did not know at first, but this was just the first sacrifice out of many for the years...
