One very popular option for many Pilibos graduates is the UC system, which offers more affordable and more practical 4-year university options than other private school or Ivy options. There are currently 9 universities in the UC system. The top UC and the #1 public school in the state is UC Berkeley with world-renowned programs and cozy campus vibes. With an acceptance rate of 15%, average GPA of 3.87 and SAT/ACT scores of 1440 and 32, UC Berkeley is an extremely selective school. Its most popular majors are economics and cellular biology. Probably the most well-known UC is UCLA. With an acceptance rate of 17%, average GPA of 4.31 and SAT/ACT scores of 1370 and 29, UCLA is extremely selective. UCLA has a holistic approach, meaning they view the whole application and there technically is no Although it has a holistic approach, its application process holds much weight on GPA. Its most popular majors are economics and political science. The second-tier schools are UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine, with average GPAs ranging from 3.9-4.02, acceptance rates ranging from 33-39% and SAT/ACT scores at 1250-1330 and 27-28. San Diego’s most popular majors are sociology and economics, Irvine favors biology and social psychology while Davis excels at research and experimental psychology. Besides UC Merced, the only two schools left are UC Santa Cruz and UC Riverside. With average GPAs of 3.69-3.76, acceptance rates from 51-56% and SAT/ACT scores of 1190-1260 and 23-26, these universities are relatively easier to get into. Santa Cruz’s most popular majors are psychology and sociology, while business administration and psychology are popular at Riverside. Tune in next week for more information on the Ivies!

Winter Formal

At 12:15 on Friday, January 19, students rushed out of the Abcarian building halls, hoping they would have enough time to get ready for the long awaited, formal. Guys put on their best suits and the girls slipped into their best dresses, anxiously waiting to see what their friends are going to wear. Members of specific grade levels gathered earlier together to start the celebration and take lots of pictures. Soon students started rolling into the beautifully decorated hall in Metropol. The night started off with dining, along with the occasional dancing to the Armenian music being played. However, as the music got more intense, students could not get off the dance floor. The rhythmic beats of Armenian, Arabic, Spanish, and English music filled the hall and the bodies of the students. They took a quick break for some water and kebab, but quickly stood back up to continue dancing. Anna Turcotte Visits Pilibos

   We are Armenian scholars in an Armenian school; because of this, we are often exposed to our country’s good and bad, the highs and lows. We often hear about the Armenian Genocide and the Artsakh conflicts, but we are not always reminded of the conflicts our people face outside of the homeland. We have seen Genocide survivors and young Artsakh soldiers whose stories we have heard and are a little familiar to us. However we rarely hear from a survivor of mass discrimination and violence, who stood up with Armenians the way other survivors did- just outside the homeland. Pilibos freshmen, sophomores and juniors met one such survivor in an assembly on Tuesday February 27 when Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte came to Pilibos to share her story and experiences. Anna Turcotte was a ten year old girl living in Azerbaijan when her mother told her she could no longer go to volleyball practice. She did not know at first, but this was just the first sacrifice out of many for the years...
