Pilibos Pre-Registers!
National Voter Registration Day is more likely than not an overlooked day. Despite this, it is of extreme importance and fundamental to the success of the democracy. In honor of this day, Pilibos juniors and seniors attended a presentation given by representatives from ANCA Western Region and the Los Angeles City Clerk’s Office on the importance of voting, specifically on the city level. The LA Office delivered a shocking statistic that only 10-15% of registered voters actually vote in the city elections. The speaker stated how the city elections are often overlooked, but are extremely important because they impact the citizens of Los Angeles directly and immediately. These elections not only choose immediate policies, but also choose the city’s representatives in the State Congress. Both ANCA and the LA Office emphasized that the youth are especially important to elections. With enough numbers, the youth can overturn the ever-persistent elderly voting bloc and help put in policies that the next generation wants to see. The committee then talked about how the youth could get involved before they could vote. One example was being a student poll-worker. On election days, students can work at their local poll, helping with the productivity and efficiency of that station, thus gaining experience in the voting sphere and interacting in a space with many different ideas and opinions. Pre-registration forms were passed out to conclude the presentation. Any Pilibos student over the age of sixteen and a legal US citizen was eligible to fill out the form with the help of the officials. Once they pre-registered, their names would automatically be on the ticket when they reached the legal age to vote: eighteen. Thus, they took the first step to being an active member of the American democracy: a voter.
