Movie Reviews: The Post and The Darkest Hour

As we all parted ways with 2017 and entered into the fresh and new 2018, we have all came across new and Oscar worthy films that have not only changed the views of the audience but also us writers, as we exchange our opinions on The Darkest Hour and The Post. Both films are actually Oscar nominated. The Darkest Hour was released in November 22, 2017. The film was about the life of British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. The Darkest Hour was directed by Joe Wright and the screenwriter was Anthony McCarten. Churchill was portrayed by British Actor, Gary Oldman (Academy Award nominee). Oldman, as some of you may have seen behind the bars of Azkaban as Harry Potter’s godfather in the infamous series Harry Potter, did a spectacular job as Churchill. Wright did a great job finding the perfect collaborator, Gary Oldman, who is amazing with embracing his dramatic side making him the perfect person to embody the character of Churchill. The film took place around World War II. The movie opens...

Larry Nassar Gets What He Deserves

Since the beginning of 2018, there has been an outburst of awareness about the oppressive patriarchies that have abused women and other minorities for generations and generations. This has been evident with the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the countless other bigshot Hollywood A-listers that have been targeted and tarnished. However, one might ask if this is truly only an elitist movement. Celebrities do have the attention and influence necessary to bring any issue to the public sphere with a simple tweet or Instagram post. However, the Larry Nassar scandal hits closer to home for many, as the notorious former gymnastics doctor and forevermore pedophile put young girls, children, into a cycle of abuse that many survivors did not have the resources or influence to stand out- until now. In court a couple weeks ago, Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 125 years in prison: a federal charge for child pornography and several counts of sexual abuse. This was the culmination of years of abuse...

Cuba

If you were planning on going to Cuba anytime soon, things may just get harder. President Trump will most likely curb ties that Obama adopted with the country. During his first few months of presidency, he tweeted that he wants to terminate Obama’s diplomatic relations with Cuba. The changes will happen soon, most likely sometime in June. However, his plans put a few of Obama’s key aspects at risk. The recently opened embassies in Havana and Washington, D.C. may be at risk, though many believe Trump would not close them since they allow for greater connections between the countries. Obama also set up many direct flights to Cuba. However, the demand has not been high causing many airlines to limit or cancel their flights. Trump is unlikely to further cancel the limited flights, but their is still a risk. American companies are most likely going to lose their hotel operations in the country. Airbnb, however, may survive because it allows for Cubans to rent out their places to other Cuba...

How Harry Potter Changed Fiction

Written by Veronica Mkhsi-Gevorkian As we enter 2018 we have seen a major change not only in children’s literature but also in women writers. It is a challenge for women to be a part of the world of fiction. In the past women had to write under a pseudonym or a pen name. They had to do this due to the fact that men would not read books written by the female authors. Authors such as Joanne Rowling, aka JK Rowling, have completely changed the view on not just children's fiction but also young adult novels. Can you imagine a life without the infamous Harry Potter series? Well, I certainly can’t. Harry Potter has been a staple series for all ages to enjoy. From fighting dragons to playing Quidditch, the wizard’s sports, Harry Potter helped readers tap into not only the Wizarding World of Harry Potter but the mind of JK Rowling. There are many similar forms of fictional writing, including novels such as Jane Yolen’s 1991 book called Wizard’s Hall and Jill Murphy’s Worst Witch; why i...

Breaking News: Current Influenza Outbreak

Worst Flu Outbreak in a Decade It may seem as if people always exaggerate about the severity of the flu and the need to get flu shots. However, the 2018 flu season may be living up to the flu’s reputation, as this outbreak has been the most severe and drastic now than in recent years, with the CDC declaring it an “epidemic;” this is due to the dramatic increase of diagnoses and hospitalizations. (Ducharme) The 2018 strain has even gone so far as to claim the lives of thirty children. Health care officials say that now about six percent...

The juniors were dressed up in their holiday attire, with festive scarves and hats. As the choir made their way to the steps, the audience cheered. Before the program started, the Der Hayr blessed the audience and program with a recitation of the Hayr Mer. Then the choir sang a medley of Christmas songs from classical English to traditional Armenian. The program started with a solo from senior Armen Shahinyan, who played along with...
